Thank you very much indeed for agreeing to take part in this survey.
I am a doctor in the specialty of Occupational Medicine, with a particular interest in health and work.
Within Occupational Medicine one of my interests is the health and wellbeing of ordained ministers / clergy . This work is part of an MSc dissertation looking at both the health criteria for ordination and indeed prevailing sickness rates in those in ordained ministry.
Over the years I have worked with a large Christian denomination making decisions about fitness for ordination training and subsequent ministry. I was always anxious to do what was best both for this Church and for the ordinands, although I was always very conscious that all these men and women had already passed through a complex process of discernment by which their suitability for ministry had been established. What specific role did medical clearance fulfil here?
I would be grateful if you would participate in this survey by going to the Survey Monkey web site at this address: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/DRW7XGQ
Once I have all the questionnaires I will analyse them. Everything will be anonymous in every respect and in any published work no one will be able to identify your personal response or the Church denomination it comes from. Participation is of course voluntary and you can elect not to participate at any stage. You may of course decide that you do not wish to complete all the questions – and this is fine – although it would help if you could complete the questionnaire.
I am keen to be involved in improving support to those in ordained ministry and would be very grateful for your help. Within the Anglican Church ; a few of my letters have been published in the “Church Times” about this. I have also attended the Church of England’s “Think Tank” on this issue led by the Diocese of Salisbury. Within the United Reformed Church I have met with the General Secretary and have the support of the Maintenance of the Ministry Sub-Committee in undertaking work which will be useful to all of us. I am keen to remain involved in this work and would be delighted to chat with you further if that would be helpful. My contact details are below.
I will of course feedback my results once they are available to your Church. If you would like your own feedback please do contact me.
